Bigmouth Buffalo

The bigmouth buffalo is a large member of the sucker family that reaches a length of up to 1 m and resembles the common carp. It is not sensitive to human disturbance and thrives well in warm, muddy, highly enriched and poorly oxygenated waters. The bigmouth buffalo can be considered a recent inhabitant of the Sydenham River as it was not detected until 1997 in the lower reaches of both branches.
