The kidneyshell was always rare in Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair, but appears to be gone from these waters. The kidneyshell is now restricted in Canada to two reproducing populations in a 100 km stretch of the East Sydenham River and a 25 km stretch of the Ausable River.

Water quality is crucial to the survival of remaining kidneyshell populations. Pollution of rivers and streams due to agricultural runoff and urban and industrial effluent, as well as the introduction of the zebra mussel, have contributed to declines in freshwater mussel populations. Threats to the survival of the fish species that are hosts for the kidneyshell glochidium will also impact kidneyshell numbers.
