Northern Map Turtle (Graptemys geographica)

This shy, medium sized species gets its name from the irregular yellow or light brown markings along the shell that resemble the markings on a contour map.  Females are significantly larger then the males; 27 cm versus 13cm. These turtles are very social from basking in the sun to finding good places to hibernate together. Map turtles rely on vigilance, water, rapid swimming & hiding for protection; on land they're vulnerable to predators.
